Laurie Danial: Control Release Control @Froelick Gallery, November 2, 2011

The title of Laurie Danial’s newest exhibit, Control Release Control, is an idea that the artist says stays with her through almost any work that she does. “As I work through the painting,” she says, “this issue around trying to control where the painting’s going, trying to get it to work compositionally, trying to get it to be somewhat of an arresting image. So, there’s all these control issues. There’s definitely certain points in the process where I let go, and that just seems to be the thing to make it all come together.”

D.K. Row has reviewed Laurie Danial’s exhibit, Beautiful Losers,in the Friday, May 9th edition of The Oregonian, A&E section.

“…I love Danial’s new paintings at Froelick Gallery. They seem more intuitive, explode with color, while continuing to fuse abstraction with more recognizable elements. There’s also a hint of Japonisme in these works, of Floating World luxury and indulgence. Bravo.”

“Laurie Danial is represented at Portland’s Froelick Gallery and Eva Speer by Seattle’s Viveza Gallery, but both merit bigger audiences. Danial’s “Holy Mess” seems almost three-dimensional, as geometric planes and patterns intersect and colors drip down the canvas onto one another.”
